Students for Bioethical Prisons

The United State leads the world in incarceration. Prioritizing punishment over rehabilitation has led to mass imprisonment, mainly of the nation's most vulnerable populations: people of color, the economically disadvantaged, and under-educated, and those suffering from mental illness. The health discrepancies are the most concerning. Students will learn from first hand correspondence with those incarcerated how the prison systems are being affected through a bioethical lens as it pertains to health and human rights.

March on Washington

There are currently two pandemics being faced by BIPOC: coronavirus and racism. Although there is a vaccine in the works for one of them, there is no vaccine for the other. Communities are now risking their lives to fight against the injustices of our nation. As our mission is to end the plague of minority health disparities deeply rooted in the urban community, it is our duty to utilize our specialty in health awareness to ensure our community's safety and support during this time. Our students and participants will learn the importance of collaboration within our community, have the opportunity to understand, combat and confront health disparities within our nations most marginalized communities.

Our new virtual reality is taking our students away from interaction with friends and classmates. The retention rate for virtual learning is also significantly lower than what is portrayed in the classroom. Fear of the unknown can cause a lot of stress for students, parents, teachers and administrators. We all want to do our best in our community's education system, but there are pieces of the puzzle missing like lunch, healthy eating options and practices for both (even at home). This project will provide students the opportunity for virtual extra-curricular programs and leadership opportunities. Students will be able to lead and host conversations focused on educational health awareness, prevention, and brainstorms ways in which we all can play a role in flattening the curve of families affected. As an incentive, student members are able to attend activities and educational trips which allow for them to be a pioneer within their respective community. Students can take the skills learned as members and leaders and apply it to their professional or collegiate experience. Students will also be able to be voted in as e-board members, interns, and paid staff. With our new virtual reality, these kind of incentives promises student involvement, retention, and engagement.
