Our Story
Founded in 2015, Raising Awareness with Students (RAWS) began as a grassroots initiative to address health disparities in minority communities, with a focus on diabetes awareness. Starting as a Registered Student Organization at Michigan State University, RAWS quickly expanded its reach, engaging in meaningful discussions at Harvard Medical School on bioethics, health, and human rights in the prison system. Today, RAWS empowers communities through impactful programming in public schools, interactive events, and health education that fosters healthier lives.
Founder’s message
"I founded RAWS in 2015 after reflecting on my family’s struggles with diabetes, especially watching my mom manage her blood sugar while I felt helpless as a child. During college at Michigan State, I realized the importance of raising awareness about health disparities and empowering communities with knowledge.
Starting as a campus organization during Diabetes Awareness Month, RAWS quickly grew, leading to meaningful opportunities like discussions at Harvard Medical School and impactful programs in schools and communities. My passion lies in helping young people build healthy habits early, addressing challenges like access to nutritious food, and empowering individuals to take control of their health and future."
